I think this center was a cruel way to treat people that might have something as slight as a stutter and that it may just be one of the reasons that lapeer is here today and could be the founder of lapeer.
I am a social worker, and some of my clients lived at Oakdale when they were younger. They were not treated nicely. One of my ladies was "sterilized" without any consent b/c she was developmentally disabled and shouldn't be allowed to have children. Another one of my clients carries all her possessions on her b/c if you left anything in your room, it would be stolen by other residents or by staff.
Did they treat them badly? You said it was a cruel way to treat them, how were they treated?
